The ETIAS authorization permits entries into the relevant European nations for up to 90 days within any 180-day period and remains valid for a total of three (3) years.
Upon the expiration of this three-year period, you cannot extend the existing ETIAS. However, you have the option to apply for a new ETIAS.
Renewing Your ETIAS Authorization
In order to renew your ETIAS authorization, you should initiate the renewal process 120 days before the expiry of the travel authorization to ensure there is no delay in processing your application.
The ETIAS Central System will inform you right away about:
- Your travel authorization’s expiration date.
- The possibility to submit an application for a new authorization.
- The obligation to be in possession of a valid travel authorization for the entire duration of your stay on the territory of the member states.
All notifications regarding the application will be sent to the email address you provided when you submitted your application.
How to Apply for Renewal of ETIAS Authorization?
You can submit your application form online. You will be required to submit the following information:
- Your personal information and contact details.
- Travel document information.
- Education and occupation information.
- The member state of the first intended stay.
- Answers to three security-related questions about any criminal record, previous travels to areas of conflict of war, and past immigration history within the EU and other countries, including any instances where the applicant was required to leave a member state or received an order to return to their home country.
Processing of Your ETIAS Authorization Application
Once you submit your application, it will take 96 hours to be processed. In case your application needs to be processed manually, you will be notified. You might be required to submit additional documents, or in exceptional circumstances, you may be invited for an interview.
I Obtained My ETIAS Travel Authorization Before I Reached 18. Is My ETIAS Still Valid?
If you have obtained ETIAS travel authorization before you turn 18 years old, you won’t have to reapply or pay any additional fees for the duration of the validity period of the document. This means if you get your ETIAS when you are 17, it will still be valid until it expires, even though you will have turned 18 during that time.
What Happens if I Don’t Apply for Renewal of My ETIAS Travel Authorization?
It is strongly recommended that you apply for renewal of your ETIAS travel authorization as soon as you are notified that it will expire soon. This is because you won’t be able to travel to countries that require this permit, as well as you could face issues such as:
- Denied Boarding. You won’t be allowed to board your flight or other transport to the ETIAS countries.
- Entry Refusal. If, in any way, you manage to get to the border without a valid ETIAS, the border officials will refuse your entry into the country.
- Legal Penalties. You could face serious penalties, such as being deported back to your country, a ban on entering the European countries that require ETIAS (which could be from a few months to several years), as well as being sentenced to one year in prison in other extreme cases and depending on the country’s laws.
