Annullment or Revocation of ETIAS

Once issued, an ETIAS will be valid for three years, during which time you can make multiple entries to the territory of the Member States. However, if it is suspected or revealed that you do not meet the conditions of obtaining an ETIAS, your travel authorization may be revoked or annulled.

Why Would My ETIAS Be Annulled or Revoked?

The reasons for the annulment or revocation of an ETIAS travel authorization are as follows:

  • If it becomes evident that the conditions for issuing it were not met at the time it was issued, your ETIAS will be
  • If you obtained an ETIAS fraudulently, your ETIAS will be annulled.
  • If it becomes evident that the conditions for issuing it are no longer met, your ETIAS will be revoked.
  • If a new alert is issued in the Schengen Information System (SIS) concerning a refusal of entry and stay or a travel document reported as lost, stolen, misappropriated, or invalidated, your ETIAS will be

The reasons for the annulment and revocation of your ETIAS are based on the reasons for the refusal of ETIAS, including incomplete application or invalid passport.

How Will I Know If My ETIAS Has Been Annulled or Revoked?

When your ETIAS travel authorization has been annulled or revoked, you will receive a notification via email. This notification will include the following information:

  • Reason for annulment or revocation. The notification will clearly state that your travel authorization has been annulled or revoked
  • Information on the ETIAS National Unit. This is the Unit responsible for the annulment or revocation of your travel authorization.
  • Whether you have a right to appeal. You will be informed about your right to lodge an appeal and the time limit for doing so. The notification will also provide a link to the relevant information on the relevant ETIAS website.
  • The number of your ETIAS travel authorization application.

Always Check the Status of Your ETIAS Before You Travel!

Since an ETIAS is issued for a period of three years, it may be revoked or annulled in the period of time between your trips to Europe during those years. Although you will be notified via email in case your ETIAS has been cancelled, you should always double check before you travel.

You will not be allowed entry into ETIAS territory if your authorization has been revoked or annulled.

What If My ETIAS Is Annulled/Revoked While I’m In Europe?

If your travel authorization is cancelled while you are already in an ETIAS Member State, the cancellation will become effective once you exit the territory, and your exit record has been created in the EES (Entry/Exit System). This means, once you exit, you can no longer re-enter the territory unless you obtain a new valid ETIAS travel authorization.

What Can You Do If Your ETIAS Is Annulled or Revoked?

If your ETIAS has been annulled or revoked, you have two options:

  • You can re-apply for a new ETIAS. If your authorization was cancelled because of an incomplete application or expiration of your passport, you can simply apply for a new ETIAS before your next trip to Europe. A revocation or annulment of your travel authorization does not necessarily mean that your new application will also be refused.
  • You can appeal the decision. If you feel like the decision to annul or revoke your ETIAS was wrong, you have the right to appeal the decision. In this case, you must lodge the appeal in the Member State that issued the decision on the annulment/revocation.
